Club News                                                           Last updated on 31 August 2008.

Club News from 2004 to 2007 is still available and can be downloaded as PDF files from the  News Archive page.

31 August 2008

Summer arrived in Britain yesterday, for a very fleeting visit - today has brought the return of the rain, and as a result our visit to Kingston Bagpuize today has been called off.

Our next match is next Sunday, away to Ashford Hill, at the earlier time of 1.30pm.

25 August 2008

The weather finally relented yesterday as we managed to complete a game for the first time this month, with a memorable 8 wicket win at Bradfield.

Chasing a target of 204, we chased the target down with time to spare in a similar manner as against Englefield a few weeks back, but this time our century-maker was captain Mike Palfrey, who hit his highest ever score of 130 not out, after opening the batting. Offering valuable support in three partnerships of above 50 were Craig Woodley (20), Garry Masters (18) and Mark Whitelock, whose 27 not out was his seventh unbeaten innings of the season.

Earlier, Les Woodley claimed two wickets as Bradfield posted an imposing total, with opener Ashby makinh 55, and Jack Parsons 102 before falling in the penultimate over of the innings.

However it was Mike's unbeaten hundred which stole the show - his innings included 18 fours and a six and was made in 125 minutes.

Full scorecards from our last few games and some reports from this seasons matches will follow soon hopefully - the Match News section is in need of a major update.

15 August 2008

Our match this coming Sunday at Ramsdell has been called off today; our next game will therefore be on Sunday 24 August, away to Bradfield, 2.30 pm.

11 August 2008

Our last two matches have both been belated victims of the changeable August weather, both being abandoned without a result at similar stages.

The game on 3rd August against Reading Lawyers was called off after a prolonged heavy shower with our score on 63 for 3 as we chased a target of 151, while last Sunday visitors Kingsclere had reached 54 for 3, in pursuit of a target of 91, when a very sharp downpour arrived and forced an end to play.

28 July 2008

In contrast to the previous weekend, yesterday brought the hottest sunshine of the summer so far, and despite not managing to take a wicket, we successfully chased down our target of 214 against nine-man Englefield with time to spare thanks mainly to a brilliant unbeaten 123 from Garry Masters.  Scorecard to follow soon.

Our next match will be at home this coming Sunday, 3rd August, against Reading Lawyers - start time will be back to the usual 2.30pm.

24 July 2008

Our run of six straight wins was brought to an end at a chilly Kingsclere on Sunday evening, as we went down by 36 runs at the Fieldgate Centre.  Scorecard to follow soon.

A reminder that our next match, this coming Sunday against Englefield at Wasing Park, will start at the earlier time of 2.00 pm.

15July 2008

Our match against Mortimer may have been cancelled on Sunday but we were able to play a hastily arranged fixture against touring team Bristol Llamas, winning by 8 Wickets in a 35 overs per side game.  Scorecard to follow soon.

11July 2008

Just a brief update to say that our scheduled match this coming Sunday at home to Mortimer has been called off.

Our net game will therefore be on 20th July away to Kingsclere, starting 2.30 pm.

6 July 2008

Our scheduled match against Ashford Hill at Wasing Park today has fallen foul of this morning's downpours, and was called off shortly after 11.00.

Our next match will be next Sunday, at home against Mortimer, starting at 2.30 pm.

1 July 2008

We extended our winning run to five matches on Sunday with a 84 run victory at Purley On Thames, who we beat for the first time since 2004.  A couple more big partnerships and some more heavy run scoring from Ali (41), Garry masters (34) and Kamran Chaudhry (77 not out), as well as an entertaining cameo of 24 from Naveed Raja (all his runs came in boundaries), and another unbeaten knock from Mark Whitelock (29 not out, to take his average for the season to a healthy 103!) took us to a tricky total of 219 in our 40 overs.  For a while, our hosts were well in the game, but a couple of quick wickets saw them start to fall behind the required rate, and we eventually wrapped up victory with 31 balls to spare, by a comfortable margin.  There were two wickets each for Naveed Raja, Mark Woodley, Ali, and Kamran Chaudhry.

As previously mentioned, Mark Whitelock's batting average currently stands at 103, but Kamran Chaudhry has bettered that, currently on 106.50, after unbeaten knocks of 106 and 77.  Garry Masters is leading run scorer with 264 runs in 6 innings.  Mark Woodley is still leading wicket-taker, with 11.

Full batting averages and others stats are on the Scorer's Table page, with a full set of bowling stats to follow soon.

Our next match is this coming Sunday at home to Ashford hill, starting at 2.30 pm.

24 June 2008

Our wining run stretched to four straight matches on Sunday with a 5 Wicket win at Woolhampton, Some tight bowling restricted our opponents to 160 for 9 in their 40 overs, and thanks to some big hitting from Ali (74) we won with 29 balls to spare, despite a slight wobble in the middle of the innings where we lost three wickets for 14 runs in 7 overs.  Full scorecard is available on the Match News page.

I have now added some averages and stats to the site on the Scorer's Table page; full bowling averages will follow soon.

Our next match is this coming Sunday at Purley On Thames, starting at 2.30 pm.

15 June 2008

We registered our third straight win on Sunday with a 144 run success at Whitchurch On Thames, in an excellent all-round performance which included an unbeaten century from Kamran Chaudhry and 56 from Garry Masters.  Wickets were shared around with Mark Woodley finishing with the best figures (3 for 9) as we bowled our hosts out for 59.  A full scorecard is available on the Match News page.

4 June 2008

The weather relented on Sunday, and allowed us an uninterrupted afternoon of cricket, during which we recorded our second straight win, this time by 7 Wickets over Ramsdell, at Wasing Park.   A good all-round performance, with some tight on bowling (albeit on a difficult pitch for batting), some good fielding and later some sharp running between the wickets allowed us to ease to our target of 125 with 9 balls to spare.  Full scorecard on the Match News page.

No match is scheduled for this weekend, so our next game will be at Whitchurch on Thames, on Sunday week, 15 June.  Directions to their ground can be found on their website, here

25 May 2008

After a week of generally good weather, the rain has returned today and our matach against Purley On Thames at Wasing Park has been called off.

19 May 2008

We registered our first win of the new season yesterday with a 121 run win over new opponents Chiltern Gypsies at Wasing Park, notable performances being a century by Garry Masters, (106, to match the England captain's hundred at Lord's on the same day), his second for the club, and 3 for 9 in 9 overs from Naveed Raja.  A full scorecard is now available from the Match News page, with a report to follow soon.

15 May 2008

The scorecard from our first match of the season against Pangbourne is now available on the Match New page.  A full report will follow soon.

Our next game is at home this coming Sunday against Chiltern Gypsies, who we will be playing for the first time - weather permitting.

7 May 2008

Despite the earlier predictions of doom concerning the weather, we played our first match of the season at Pangbourne on Sunday and suffered a 73-run defeat at the college.  Full report and scorecard to follow soon I hope.

Our next scheduled match against Bucklebury this coming Sunday has unfortunately been called off.  Our next fixture will therefore be at home on Sunday 18 May against Chiltern Gypsies, who we will be playing for the first time.

30 April 2008

While updating the site last week the Scorer's Table page would not upload because the site had reached it's size limit of 15mb.  The page is now live again, and some old stuff has been removed from the site to create more space, mainly the Photo Gallery.

The photos will return, and will be added to by some snaps from this coming season, but they will be hosted on PhotoBucket, not on this site.

I have now created a PDF file of all of last season's scorecards; this is available from the Scorer's Table page.  I would like eventually, to get all the scorecards since at least 2004 onto the site as PDFs, but this is going to take a while to do.

After a day of heavy rain and the issuing of severe weather warnings in some parts of Britain today, any doubt that the cricket season has arrived has now been banished.  I'm not sure exactly where this leaves our opening game of the season this coming Sunday at Pangbourne (drowning, most likely), but no doubt things will become clear, and hopefully dryer, over the next couple of days.  News of further downpours, cancellations, or even, god forbid, some actual cricket, will follow here as and when they occur (or not).

23 April 2008

With only three weeks to go before the start of the season, we have now filled another two dates on the fixture list.

On 18 May we will be playing a home fixture against Chiltern Gypsies, and on 31 August, bank holiday Sunday, we will be making our first trip to Kingston Bagpuise.  A full list of fixtures is available on the Fixtures & Results page.

A reminder that there is now only one net session remaining before the season starts,  on Sunday 27th April, at the Willink School, Burghfield Common, 7.15 pm to 8.15 pm.

The Club held it’s annual pre-season meal recently at the Hind’s Head in Aldermaston.  Thanks to Mike for doing the organising, a good evening was had as always.

What with various things going on, many of them involving either the building or knocking down of walls, there hasn’t been much updating going on and the season seems to have crept up on me a bit quickly this year.  I have now done an extensive update and spring clean to get things ready for the season.  2007 Club News has been archived into a PDF file, (Match News will also be PDFed along with scorecards soon) as well as last year’s results and stats, among other things.

In the longer term I’m hoping that this will be the final season before the site undergoes not only a redesign, but also a ‘back-end’ overhaul.  The site is currently created on Microsoft Frontpage, a package which is no longer made or even supported, and as I’m hoping that all being well, I’ll have a new PC this time next year, the site will eventually be re-built using something a bit more robust and up-to-date.  In the meantime, to keep you entertained in between matches, I’m still working on some longer-term stats and records, including career stats for all our current players for as far back as I can go.  I hope to have these uploaded soon, possibly before the start of the season.

25 March 2008

Fixtures for the forthcoming season have been added to the Fixtures & Results page.  The season gets underway on 4 May with a trip to Pangbourne (start time 2.00 pm), and concludes on the last Sunday in September against Bradfield at home (at the usual start time of 2.30 pm).  We still have some gaps in the fixture list at various times through the summer which we will be looking to fill if possible.

20 March 2008

Due to the weather is was not possible to start ground preparation at Wasing Park on Sunday.  This has been re-scheduled for Good Friday, 21 march (ie, tomorrow) from 10.00 am.

14 March 2008

Ground preparation for the new season begins at Wasing Park this coming Sunday, 16 march, from 10.30 am.  All help appreciated, please bring a garden fork if possible.  If the weather looks dodgy on Sunday morning, please contact Mike in case a postponement has to be made.

A reminder that nets continue at the Willink School, Burghfield Common on Sunday evening from 7.15 pm.  Come along for some pre-season practice if you dare, tin hat and body amour are optional, but strongly recommended.

1 March 2008

Nets have been arranged at the Willink School, Burghfield Common, every Sunday between 7.15pm and 8.15 pm, starting tomorrow, Sunday 2nd March and running until Sunday 27 April.

24 February 2008

The Club's AGM was held recently, below are some of the main points arising from the meeting:

David Bardwell has been elected Acting Chairman.

The cost and structure of match fees will remain the same as last year – a flat fee of £9, with no subscription.  Junior fees will remain at £6.

The gang mowers have been replaced but problems have been experienced with them which are in the process of being resolved.

Fixtures for the forthcoming season have, for the most part been confirmed.   A full list will follow soon.  NB. Sandra Woodley has taken over as Fixture Secretary.

Mike Palfrey has been re-appointed as Team Captain for the coming season, with Gary Masters re-appointed as Vice-Captain.

Net sessions will commence hopefully in mid-to-late February, with the Willink School at Burghfield  the likely venue.

Work on the pavilion and ground in preparation for the new season will begin on Saturday 15 March 2008. (NB, as of the Committee Meeting of Monday 18 February, this has now been changed to Sunday 16 March at 10.00 am).

A pre-season meal will once again be arranged for the end of March.  This has now been confirmed as Saturday 29 March at 8.00 pm is the preferred time – confirmation to follow.

A fund-raising Race Night will be arranged for towards the end of the 2008 season – likely date is August or September.

There has been a long absence of any activity whatsoever on the web site which I hope to put right soon with some extensive updating, in preparation for the new season.  I have now worked out career averages for the majority of the current core of players (and in some cases records covering the past 16 years), and I hope to have these collated and published soon, along with a couple of extra items for the Scorer's Table page and Chairman's Report from the recent AGM.  I have a stack of photos from last season; I will be picking some of the best of the bunch and posting them soon, probably via Photobucket and the forum rather than on the actual web site, due to quantity, size and the amount of time it takes to actually get them onto the site, which is starting to creak around the edges these days.

News on nets and fixtures for the forthcoming season will also follow soon I hope.

8 January 2008

The club's AGM will take place on Tuesday 22nd January at The Old Mill in Aldermaston, commencing at 8.00 pm.
